THE CARNIVAL.

was the centre of attraction last night. 1 hitherwards crowds set in from seven o’clock till nine, and there must have been between 3,000 and 4,000 persons of all ages within the walls of Messrs Guthrie and Lamach’s buildings. So crowded were the second aud top floors during most of the time, that moving about was not attended with much comiort, and the musical performances were not heard to the advantage they would have otherwise been. Mr Schott has under his coutro a very efficient orchestra, which performed a number of selections very creditably. Mention must be made of “The Lieder Waltz” aud an overture, which went very well. On the lower floors the Artillery and Nymphe bands played alternately. The latter were in tetendance in response to a request made by the Mayor to Capt. Luttie. The machinery in motioned attracted considerable attention, while Mr Stanford was kept pretty busy answering inquiries in reference to the working of his writing machine. Dancing was indulged in for an hour, but we should not think with much comfort, seeing the crowded state of the room. Yesterday’s takings were - £ s. d. Refreshment bars 60 0 0 Sale of ‘ Carnival Gazette’ 12 0 0 Sundries 3 0 0 Doors, afternoon 74, 0 0 „ evening 97 0 0 £236 0 0
