THE PARADE. To-day was ushered in by the Volunteer parade, which took place at 8.30 this morning. The parade was very strong, numbering, besides the staff officers, over 300 men. The strength of the various corps was : —South District Rifles, two officers and nineteen men ; Artillery, two officers and forty men; City Guards, two officers and twenty-nine men; North Dunedin, three officers and twentyoue men; City Guards’ Cadets, one officer and thirty men ; Naval Brigade, two officers and twenty-four men; Artillery Band, twenty-two men; Guards’ Band, sixteen men ; High School Rifles, two officers and sixty-one men ; High School Artillery, one officer and twenty-one men. Yesterday the Clutha Rifles fired a handicap match for a gold albert chain, presented by Capt. Willocks, the champion, and five other prizes. The ranges were 200, 400, 500, and 600 yards, five shots at each range. Vol. Blackie won the first prize, starting at scratch with a score of 65 ; Vol. W. Willocks, with one point allowed, the second with 61 ; and Vol. John Widocks the third, Vol, John Willocks also won the recruits’ prize, for all having a handicap over ten points, being handicapped at fourteen points. CHALLENGE MATCH. The return challenge match—ten men aside—between members of the City Guards and Clutha Rifles took place to-day. By arrangement the match against the Bruce Rifles was fired at the same time, the scores of the Guards’ counting against both companies. The country representatives arrived in town by the first tram this morning, and were met at the railway station by the Guards, when a start was immediately made for the range. Firing commenced shortly before noon. The weather was beautifully calm. The ranges were 200, 500, and 600 yards ; five shots at each ; Wimbledon targets ; standing at 200 yards. At 200 yards it was expected that big scores would be the order of the day, but strange to say outer after outer was planted on the target. At the close of the range the scores stood— Clutha, 134; Bruce, 130; Guards, 133. At 500 yards Clutha scored 147 ; Bruce, 14 i ; Guards, 133. Vol. Nutsford, for the Bruce Rifles, scored a possible 20 at this range. The totals new stood—Clutha, 281; Bruce, 274 ; Guards, 266. At the beginning of the last range the wind commenced to blow, and stiffened as the firing proceeded. Subjoined are the scores in extemo ;—
