THE TRADESMEN’S RACES.

The weather to-day was dull, but no rain fell. The attendance at the time of the starting of the first race was about 1,000, which increased considerably during tie afternoon. The course was in capital order, but owing to last week’s rain, a trifle dull. For the Maiden Plate, Flying Beauty was scratched. Mr Smith’s racing looking Sultan was served up warm for this, 3 to 2 being taken freely about him r Miss Llswick and Larrikin were next in favor. The following are the results of the day’s racing;

A good start was effected, Larrikin taking the lead past the stand, on the inside, with Miss Elswick at his girths, Grecian Bend a length behind. Going round the opposite side of the course, Sultan went up to the leaders, and Larrikin falling back the two* year-old filly took up the running with the black in close attendance. At the turn into the straight, Miss Elswick led by a length, but here Smith brought Sultan up, and, though both were under the whip, his passed the filly after the semblance of a struggle, and won comfortably by three lengths. Grecian Bend was a fair third, and Clontarf fourth. The Fair Puritan colt, who was run in blinkers, stuck at the post and ran into the ditch. Time, 2miu 25£ sec. Magic went away at a great pace at the start, and in the first mile passed Jessie, Frost, Jenny, Safety, Lilly, and Kate. Polly led by 150 yards past the stand, Darkio second, Magic third. Going round, the old grey passed Darkie, and took second place ; Polly still keeping a long way ahead, andgoing finely. Sbe finished the second mile 100 yards ahead of Magic, who was the same dinfamn» before Dork e. The others were all out of it, Safety being actually last. In the last round Magic br ike twice, but any way could not Lave caught Polly, who came in an easy winner by 110 yards, Magic second, Darkle a bad third. Time, 9min. 27sec, against' dmin. Taornor got off worst, King Philip and Glengarry cutting out the limning together and passing the stand abreast, Merrybird close up. At a mile Cotton began to xidft

the King vigorously, and Tadmor passed Merryhird and took a forward position. Straight opposite the stand King Philip commenced to fall hack, and Tadmor came up on the outside and collared Glengarry, the two turning into the straight together two lengths ahead of the King. A grand race ensued right up the centre of the course, but Tadmor always had a little the best of it, and won eventually by a length. Merrybird shot into third place, thus making the King absolute last. Time, 3miu 27|sec. The result was a great upset, and the bookmakers were jubilant. Selling Face, of 35 sots. One mile and a distance Weight for age. Betting: 3 to 1 against Flying Beauty, who was rushed up at the last moment; 2 to 1 Fox and Bucephalus; 3 to 1 Euclid; 5 to 1 Miss Alfred.

A capital start was made. Miss Alfred rushing to the front and taking the lead of two lengths, hard held, Bucephalus and Flying Beauty next, Fox fourth. Going round tbe turn, Fox went through his horses, and led at a mile, Bucephalus and Flying Beauty lying next, Swaggerer comiug up and looking dangerous, Bucephalus now shot his bolt and fell back, and old Swag gerer then came with a i nsh and collared Fox at the straight. The whips were then freely used, and a fine struggle ensued, but the grey horse had the most in him, and he v/on a desperate race on the post by half a length. Flying Beauty was third, Euclid fourth ; the rest came in straggling. Time, 2min 13|sec.

Tradesmen’s Handicap, of 60 sots. The second horse to receive 10 sots from the stakes. One mile and a-quarter. The winner of the Birthday Handicap to carry 71b extra. King Philip and Glengarry were scratched. Betting :3to 2 against Rob Roy; 2to 1 Haphazard; 3to 1 Tadmor ; sto 1 any other.

After several breaks away all got off together, except Miss Elswick. Rob Roy had the inside running, and led by a clear length past the stand, Tadmor and Haphazard next, then Steamer and Seabird. The same order was kept for a mile, when the field drew more together, but Rob Roy was never approached, and won, hands down, by three lengths; Tadmor second, by half-a-length from Haphazard, Steamer fourth. Consolation Handicap, of 35 horse. The second horse to receive 10 sovs from the stakes. One mile.
