FIJIAN NEWS.

The U.S. Tuscaroa is lying at Samoa awaiting the arrival of the Pearl and a German man-of-war, to hold a conference on —Samoan affairs. The following letter from the Resident Commissioner shows the whole progress of operation against the Hill tribes : burnt during the past week six villages of loyal natives, killing and wounding fourteen, chiefly women and children. They were * then attacked by Nadgaroga and Korehinaoan people and by those of the coast vil- . lages between Singatohe mouth and avoid, who burnt a number of their villages, killing six and taking six prisoners, driving them up the river to Euaailevu, where they are now capture, whenever it shall be expedient to take them. The whole of the village belonging to the tribes who have been charged with Killing goats, &c., belonging to Byrne and Header, have been destroyed; some of the ringleaders have been shot, and some taken prisoners. Also, on the 24th inst., tribes from Nabattantau, Wairoro, and Nagaugau, assembled in force to attack Tatuba, a loyal village in oiir immediate vicinity, whoso inhabitants had given offence by supplying our camp with food. These people burnt the houses in tho village, when the old men women, and children took refuge in a cave. The mouth of the cave was taken possession of by the heathen natives, who occupied themselves during the whole night in firing upon the defenceless occupants. Messengers came to inform me during the night of these occur- , rences. A light body of fifty police, seventeen: of whom carried breech-loaders, and were accompanied by about f'rty of our ‘ auxiliary forces, came up with the heathens, who were still firing into tho cave, and attacked them, completely routing them and driving them into a village, killing a notorious chief and several others who were left on the rorkl. There were also many wounded, and these savages have now received such a severe check from the head of ' the river to th? month that X believe they - will nfi longer b6 '.ablp ifp act Oh tfhe ofieq* five.
