Wellington, May 23. A movement is on foot to establish a skating rink here. A deputation of fire insurance agents will wait upon the Mayor to ask for contributions towards a steam fire engine, aud to amend the building regulations of the city. A deputation, representing the Wellington and Canterbury branches of the New Zealand Teachers’ Association, waited upon the Premier yesterday relative to certain proposed changes in the management of State education. Some of the matter was contained in the resolutions passed by the Canterbury branch recently. The Premier said they were completely in accord, but not so in other parts. Sir J. Yogel intimated that no important changes in educational matters were contemplated at present; that the District Committee would be somewhat analagous to tne present Provincial Boards, and they would be entrusted with the management of education within their aeveral jurisdictions, and that ultimately the Government will introduce a Bill for the purpose of making the system of education uniform throughout the Colony, During this interim the Government will gather information os to best mode of bringing about this state of things.
Christchurch, May 23. The land sales yesterday realised LIO.OOO. A young man named Patrick Gordon, said to be heir to LIO,OOQ a-year, was committed for trial this morning on three charges of larceny as a bailee and obtaining money by means of a valueless cheque. The examination for Junior University Scholarships commenced to-day. There are twenty-five competitors, twelve being Canterbury boys. The Darrells commenced a dramatic season at the Theatre Royal last night, and were very well received.
Weluxgtox, May 23. The Court of Appeal has over-ruled the demurrer of Messrs Brogden to the pleadings of the Crown, The point decided is that contracts may be made by the Governor on behalf of the Queen, although the Act giving authority to enter into contracts may mention only tae name of the Queen ; and further, that as the Governor has power to enter into such contracts he may delegate the power to agents; that Dr Featherston had competent authority to enter into the immigration contract upon which the Gonernment rely in the action. The Judges differed on minor points, but agreed in the main, and gave judgment for the Crown, with costs. Leave to appeal was granted.
o amaru. May 23. Mitchell, driver of the engine which burst yesterday, died last evening. An inquest is now being held.
Napier, May 23. Mr Ormond is busy sketching out Road Board districts throughout the Province, preparatory to handing over the Province to the General Government.
Everist’s Hibernicon Troupe is doin'* remarkably well, and proceeds to Wellington in a fortnight. Mr 0. J. Nairn, sheep farmer at Pouriri, had the side of his face severely injured by the bursting of a kerosene lamp.
