The following version of this case is published by the ‘Wairarapa Standard.’ This account makes it appear that Syversen shot Larsen in self-defenceA Scandinavian named Larsen, lately cook in Mr Carkeek’s «amp, Forty-Mile Bush, tied his mate up in the bush for two days, and then, armed with a pick-aze and billhook, drove him to Mellemskove, threatening to kill him there, but tome Scandinavians released him. The next day (yesterday) Larsen broke into Berendt Syversen's house, but the inmates, Mrs Syversen and her child, escaped through the window. Their screams attracted Syversen, who .ran home and loaded his gun for de fence. Larsen proceeded to enter other houses and attacked the women and children, severely, injuring Mrs Jacobsen, who was badly cut about the face, one eye destroyed, and her hand crushed, Larsen next saw Mr-J. Bannister, two Maoris, and Hr J. Lane, and chased them along the road. When he met Syversen armed with a gun. Larsen said: ‘You are a dead man; lam going' to kill you,’ and raised his pick to Strike, but Syversen lifted his gnn and the contents went into Larsen’s throat, killing him on the spot. Syversen came down to Hasterton ana reported the case to the police to-day.” The’ *M astevton News ’ gives a 1 Version of the story substantially the same fla the foregoing.
