A MARRIAGE NOT MADE IN HEAVEN.
Some time ago we mentioned the case of a Swiss emigration agent who induced an intending emigrant to consent to pass as the husband of a girl whom the parish authorities wished to ship off with her child. The pair were duly shipped out here, and on arrival the man complained of having been obliged to pass as husband and father all the voyage out. Apparently the two thus thrown together were not affinities, and each conceived a pretty good hatred of the other and went their difment ways on landing here. In the barracks the girl met a Prussian immigrant, whose wife had died on the voyage out, leaving him with five young children. Here was the true affinity. The man was going down to Southland to some friends, but he promised to send for the girl as soon as he had earned enough money, and to marry her. This week he fulfilled the promise and sent the money. Yesterday the girl left by the Ringarooma for the South, where we hope the romance will end by a marriage and living happily ever afterwards.—* Wellington Argus.’
