THE NEW CHRISTCHURCH THEATRE.

The measures for erecting a new theatre in Christchurch are rapidly assuming a practical form. Since the effort to establish a public company failed, Mr Simpson, as architect for the leaseholders of the present theatre and site, has visited Dunedin to obtain a plan of the new Princess’s Theatre in that City. The leaseholders have also in the interim arranged for the money required to erect a building in accordance with this plan, and have decided to carry it out in full, the only alterations that will be made being in the direction of improved accommodation for the public. The new theatre is to hold 300 more than the Princess’s. A greater space will be allotted to each person in the dress circle, the ventilation is to be of a more approved style, and the means of ingress and egress will be more complete. Tenders have not yet been invited for the erection of the building, but steps will be taken towards that end directly the detailed plans are finished. The Darrells commence an engagement here when the opera season terminates, and will play for a month, after which the present theatre is to be permanently closed. In the meantime the excavations for the foundations of the new structure are to be made, and other portions of the preliminary works pushed on as rapidly as possible.—‘Lyttelton Times.’
