PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.
At the usual fortnightly meeting of the above Council, held last evening, there were present the Mayor, Crs. M'Kinlay, Asher, M‘Gregor, Reid, Miller, and Dodson, Correspondence was read from Mr W, E. Brunton, manager of Logan Point Quarry, offering to supply the Corporation with material for a period of twelve months in such quantities as may be required up to 200 cubic yards per week at the following rates, delivered at the Port Chalmers railway station :—Road metal, from 1J inch, 4s 6d per yard; small metal, for asphalting or concrete, 6s 6d per yard ; screenings for footpaths or blinding, 6s 6d per yard. From the Inspector of Works, informing the Council that the kerbing and channelling between the railway station and the weighbridge was completed.—From the Corporation Solicitor, that Wilson’s lease was with the Provincial Solicitor for the purpose of getting tho Superintendent’s signature; that M‘Gill’s lease was ready for receiving the seal of the Corporation.—Re M‘Kenzie’s water rights. That the deed was ready for signing, which would probably be done in a few days; and re Austin, that when Mr Austin sold the leasehold to the Corporation for L 950 he also agreed to sell the Corporation all his interest in the road leading to the water works for L2O; but upon examining the deeds registry and making other investigations, he| found that Mr Austin has not a legal title, wherefore he advised the Corporation not to pay the L2O until Mr Austin gives a proper assignment of the road.—From the RegistrarGeneral, enclosing a cheque fer L4l 0s 9d, the balance of grant of 6s 8d in the £ on arrears of rates.
Mr Edward Shield’s offer to lease a piece of ground near Dyson’s Jetty at L 4 5s per annum was accepted. The following notice of motion was given by Cr. Miller: —“ That, in view of the water being brought into the town, it is advisable that a Volunteer Fire Brigade should be formed, and that his Worship the Mayor should cadi a public meeting to get the necessary arrangements made for carry ing this motion into effect,” It was also resolved that the Mayor call a public meeting in reference to a new cemetery.
The Clerk informed the Council that he had endeavored to make arrangements for the use of the Wesleyan Church bell in case of fire, and that Sergeant Morkane would cooperate with the Council. Cr. Asher’s motion “That the Clerk write to the quarry lessees to metal roads in terms of their leases, and that should the Corporation think any omissions take place in that respect steps be taken to enforce the conditions or cancel the leases,” was carried, as was Councillor M‘Kinlay’s motion, “That the Inspector should get the footpath in Beach street formed, and obtain the material for the blinding of the same if advisable from Logan’s Point Quarry.” Councillor Asher reported that soundings had been taken for the proposed baths, and that a report with full information would be brought forward at next meeting.
