FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
An accident happened yesterday afternoon on the Dunedin and Cluiha railway,, by which Richard Thomas, driver of a goods train, lost his A little beyond Stoney Creek station a district-road orosseß the line on a wooden bridge, the supports of which are distant about 4ft. 6in from the permanent way. When the train passed under the bridge, at about one o'clock, Thomas was, for some reason, leaning over.the side of the engine, and the posts caught him and threw him to the ground. The train was immediately stopped and Thomas was picked up insensible. He was taken on to Stirling, where Dr. Smith, of Balclutha, examined Turn, finding that he was suffering from 1 concussion of the brain. Deceased was then" sent up to Dunedin by the. evening train, but he never,recovered consciousness, and died a few minutes before nine o'clock.. Thomas was a single man, and had been employed on the Otago railways for about two years. An inquest will be held on the body on Monday next at the hospital. • : - '
