The amount of revenue received at the Customhouse on goods cleared for consumption thiß day was 1440 3s 9d.

The business of the week has been somewhat curtailed thiough difficulty of obtaining carriage, and in consequence many go Jd orders have had to wait being executed. In spite of this drawback, a fair average of transactions has taken place, but little variation in prices. Bottled ales are in rather over supply, and in the face of the approaching winter holders ore desirous Of selling. Prices are therefore nominal. Brandy remains unchanged from last quotations. Bum, R.W.P., has been sold at 3s 9d. The demand for sugar is steady and prices are but little changed. Good yellows com. mand LSI 10s to L 32105; second white, L 34. There have been several transactions in teas at prices a shade easier. The market is well supplied. In oilmen's stores Morton's pickles command 9s 3d; Eagle, 98. Vinegar, in bulk, 2s 2d. In consequence of advices from Home by last mail candles are somewhat easier, but they cannot be had under lOd. Kerosene remains firm in bond at Is 7d, and fully maintains last week's advance. The demand for dairy produce continues good. Butter is very firm at Is 4d to Is 4Jd. Cheese, 9*d to lOd. Bacon is in short supply and realises very full prices. Quotations are out of the question. Our Mosgiel correspondent telegraphs that the bankrupt estate of Messrs Webb realised at auction to-day L 3.270, the furniture and stock not included. Mr A. Mercer reports for the week ending 13th May (retail prices only) :—Fresh butter, in Mb and lib prints, Is lOd to 2s per lb; do, in lumps, Is 9d • powdered and salt do, Is Bd. The market is still well supplied with fresh butter, and demand good; salt butter, in keg, ls4d to Is 5d per lb; cheese, best quality, Is 2d per lb; side and rolled bacon, Is to Is Id per lb; Colonial hams, Is 3d; English do, Is 6d to Is 8d: eggs still centinue scarce, at 3s 6d per dozen.

LABOR MAEKET. Mr Skene reports that the leading inquiries in the labor market at present are for agricultural people of all degrees, and for female servants. Carpenters, bakers, and most skilled trades are quiet. Eoad and railway laborers and bushmen are making small money. Couples are asked for. Shopmen and clerks, unless top mon, are nowhere. Wages :—Shepherds, L6O and L 65; ploughmen, L 52, L 55, andL6oj carpenters, from 10s to 13s; house females, 10s to 15s per week; hotel do, 12s to 20s and 30s; waiters, cooks, grooms, barmen, 25s to 60s; dairy hands, 15s to 20s; store and offloe hands, 36s to 60s; boys and girls, 5s to 10s per weok; bakers (second hands), 30s and 425.
