EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Education Board was held to-day, present—the Superintendent (in the chair), Messrs Davie, Green, Gillies, and Hislop (secretary). The Secretary reported the following appointments since last meeting, which were confirmed:— A. Barrett, head master, Middle District School; James Hendry, assistant master, Albany street schoolWilliam Darling, master, St. Bathan's; Miss Graham, pupil teacher, Maungatua; F. G.Odell, master, Wairuna; John T. Campbell, Roxburgh; Mr and Mrs M'Nichol, Queenstown; Henry Henderson, Purakanui; Robert Butters, Brighton; William Macandrew, Owake Flat; James Graham, Blackstone Hill; D. M. Scott, Welshmans's ; George Hume, Anderson's Bay; Mrs Neish, Lower Harbor ; Miss M'Nichol, pupil teacher, Oamaru Grammar School; Miss Alexander, pupil teacher. North Dunedin School.

The Board passed a number of claims for two-third repairs, which were referred to the Government.

A number of applications for new schools and for grants of money for the repairing and erection of school buildings were deferred, the Superintendent and members of the Board agreeing that it was useless to take up any works involving the expendi ture of money, seeing the Executive had none at their disposal. Several assignments of leases for agricultural reserves were sanctioned.

The Board resolved to adhere to its former decisions in regard to the Albertown and Gummie's Bush Schools.

It was agreed to withdraw the subsidy from the Ida Valley School, in consequence of the paucity of the attendance, there having been only an average attendance of ten pupils during the last quarter. A communication from the Outram School Committee, in connection with the occupation of a large portion of the school site for railway purposes, was referred to the Government.

Permission was granted to C. Nicholson to carry a water-race through the Moa Flat school glebe. Sanction was given the Palmerston School Committee to a reduction of the school-mistress's salary. Mr Brownlee requested to be recognised as a music-teacher by the Board. It was resolved that his request be complied with, provided that a satisfactory report by the Inspector is obtained. Consideration of a csmmunication from Alfred R. !tims, in regard to tie establishment of a Nautical School at Port Chalmers, was deferred.

The Secretary laid his annual report on the table. It was referred to the Superintendent.
