LATEST POLITICAL ON DITS.
The 'Timaru Herald' publishes some amusing bogus telegrams, of which the following may be taken as a sample : Wellington, Sunday, 10 p.m. Though not yet officially announced, it is understood that Sir George Grey is to succeed the late Colonel St. John as private secretary to Sir Donald M'Lean, retaining his seats and votes for both the Thames and Auckland City West during the present session.
Midnight. An amicable arrangement has just been come to between Sir Julius Vogel and Mr Macandrew, by which the latter is to become confidential clerk to the Treasury and keep the petty cash. His Honor only accepts the appointment on the strict understanding that it is given to him as the fittest man for the post, and that it will not compromise his independence. Later. The report that the Hon. Mr Stafford has joined the Provincialists needs confirmation. The appointment said to be held out to him, that of chief wharfinger of the Timaru breakwater, he does not consider good enough. Monday.
Commercial. — Bidding continues brisk, and prices are improving. There is much demand for stout, but the article is not in the market.
