Hokitika, May 5. A specimen of quartz from Jackson’s Bay submitted by . the Superintendent to Mr Lewis, analyst, and tested by him, shows one ounce and a quarter of gold per ton. The prospectors state that the reef is four feet thick.
Tiriaru, May 9. The southern railway is finished as far as Otaia, but cannot be opened owing to the want of room at the Timaru station. , This inflicts a lossupon the-farmers.
Kelson, May 8, Mr Lucas, sent., proprietor of the ‘Kelson Evening , Mail, ’ died this morning after a lingering illness. At a meeting of the Regatta Committee last night it was resolved to hold an Interprovincial Regatta in January, of which the Marquis of Konnanby is to be asked to be patron. Mr Cross, the harbor-master, has offered a silver cup, of the value of L 25, for four-oared gigs.
(From our (non Correspondents.) O amaru, May 9. As the down train, which leaves Waitaki at 4.30 p.m., was approaching Lane’s crossing at 5.23 p.m.- yesterday, a man was observed upon the line leading a valuable draught mare belonging to Messrs Fleming and Hedley. The whistle was blown loudly, but the man seemed to get confused, for he did not succeed in getting the animal clear of the line, and although the brakes were put hard down the engine passed over the mare, cutting her clean in two. She was worth 150 guineas.
_ Kapiee, May 8. The Isabella Pratt arrived yesterday from Oamaru. On Saturday morning, when running at the rate of about nine knots in a heavy gale and head sea, her rudder-head suddenly dropped level with the deck. Captain Cross immediately shortened sail and headed the vessel for the Kidnapper, which was rounded at 5 p.m. After the accident to the rudder the vessel was steered by the sails.
It is proposed to form a Joint Stock Company to build a theatre. The Freemasons give the site. Kumbers of people express their willingness to take shares. An official recently connected with the R.M. Court has levanted. It is known he has gone overland to Wellington. He leaves behind him a large circle of sorrowing creditors, who are using means to get him back. It is also rumored that a charge of a serious financial character will be laid against him.
