SIR GEORGE GREY DEFIANT.
The Superintendent of Auckland’s communication to the Commissioners, whom he addresses in their full official titles, gives his reasons for refusing to assist them in their mission The concluding part of his letter is as follows:

Ton have not lawful authority, for outeringr on the duties you have now undertaken.
