CORPORATION WORK.
To the Editor.
Sib, —A new fence has-been erected by the Corporation where the poor Caversham express driver lost his life, opposite North and Scoullar'B workshop in Rattray street— I notice Mocha, pepper tree, and black maple mils in it. The first will be rotten in two years or less, and the others in about twelve months longer. Anyone living in the bush knows this. Some of the middle rails are like a camel's hump, and yet I suppose this fence cost our civic guardians as much as a private individual would erect a first-class fence for. Look again at the asphalte footpaths. ' Three years or so and then they are •one, if there is much traffic on them. If these footpaths were made out of current revenue the people would rise up and stop it; but as they are done by loans they may be done over and over again for the benefit •f contractors, and to the loss of the public, Whilst the hydra-headed public, like Rip Van Winkle, sleeps tranquilly on, unmindful of these little jobs; but soon to awaken when hard times come, and demand a thorough reformation in City expenditure. -1 am, &c., J. M. Dunedin, May 6.
