A fine start. Darkie cut out the running, Miss Elswick second, Bucephalus third. They passed the stand in that order, the others all together. Going round the back of the course Darkie still led, Merrybird second, Miss Elswick losing ground. At the turn into the straight Hastie made bis effort, and Miss Elswick quickly collared Merrybird, and the two went up to Darkie. He and Merrybird fell heavily, giving Smith a shaking. A grand race ensued between Miss Elswick and Darkie amid great excitement, the latter winning on the post by the shortest of beads, Time, 3min 14secs, Handicap Trotting, of 25 sovs. Three miles. The grey ran out wide and soon took first place, leading by a dozen lengths. He then began to come back to his horses, and Haphazard took up the running, Glengarry second and Euclid third. Haphazard gradually drew away thirty yards ahead, and odds were laid on his winning. Batty, however, rode Glengarry with great judgment, and a quarter of a mile from home began to lessen the gap between him and the leader.
