CHESS.
There is every probability of the match with Auckland for the silver cup coming off on Queen’s Birthday, as the Aucklanders only require to arrange for the use of the wires and services of the operators for the North 'aland, arrangements for this island having been satisfactorily made through the instrumentality of Mr, A. I). Lubecki, head of the telegraph department here. Great interest is being manifested in this contest : we trust therefore our Otago players will look to their laurels and take advantage of every opportunity to study and practice the game. This is especially applicable to the second-class players, because we have often seen what ought to have been won games completely thrown away through one slip, purely the result of want of constant practice. The following players are invited to play amongst themselves, so as to allow the match committee to be in a position to judge their respective merits:—VJessrs. Wilson, Quick, Paul, Mander, < ’gilvie, Park, Goldston, Dalra, linger, Jack, Hdford, Winter, and Hamilton. Gentlemen desirous of entering the lists are invited to send in their names to the honorary secretary (Mr, Archer) as early as possible.
