WHOLESALE MURDERS.
The Court of Assskes of Tarne-et-Garonne has just tried the wife of a small farmer of St. Vincent, named Grienmard, for the murder of her husband, daughter, grandson, and the father of her son-in-law, all by poison. The woman, from the time of her marriage, forty years ago, had constantly manifested a most vicious and vindictive disposition. Her only child she ill-treated most cruelly, at one moment striking her with a hoe, and injuring her seriously; on another occasion throwing her down and trampling on her. The husband fared no better, and was constantly in fear of his life ; she besides formed an adulterous connection with a neighbor, a married man, and whose wife died suddenly under suspicious circumstances. She bore a great animosity towards the family of her daughter’s husband, and when her own husband, no longer able to support a life in commen with her, went to Stay with his son-in-law, she was heard to utter menaces against them. Her hatred was besides rendered more intense by her cupidity, and she appears to have resolved to destroy all her relatives in order to inherit the little property they possessed. On more than one occasion when, she had prepared food for the family that all suffered excruciating pain as if from pbison, but recovered. However, after a visit by her on the Bth of June last, the*-same symptoms returned, but with greater violence, and of the five persons who had partaken of a meal four died, the son-in-law alone eascaping The food was found to contain a preparation of lead and phosphorus, and the impatience of the woman during the agony of the victims left liitle doubt of her guilt. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, and the court condemned her to death.
