Roxburgh, April 25. A monster public meeting was held here last night to prevent the wholesale Government land jobbery in this district, A resolution was carried unanimously, a copy of which is to he forwarded to the Superintendent- —“That this meeting views with alarm the proposed sales to Messrs Cargill and Anderson, and Npil, comprising all land available for settlement in thp district; that such sales will be a breach g{ faith, as they embrace several agricultural
Wont* promised by the Government, and authorised by the Provincial Council to be opened for public settlement, and if earned out will effectually crush all settlement, and drive the people out of the district.” Concerted advice is being taken by all the goldfields centres to prevent such reckless and disastrous maladministration of the public estate. Lawrence, April 26. The Round Hill Tunnel was pierced on Saturday night. Three months will complete the work. . Queenstown, April 22. Major Atkinson says, from Wellington, that the Government entirely disapprove of the proposed sale of the Wakatip commonage, and that the subject is receiving careful consideration. Mr Manders has been instructed to say that he will be prepared to support a Bill of indemnity if the Government stops the large land sales. The following is being largely signed here:— To Sib Julius Vogel, Pbemieb op the Colony of New Zealand. The Memorial of the undersigned residents of the Wakatip District Respectfully Showeth— That they endorse the following resolutions passed by a public meeting held at Queenstown on the 18tb day of April, in the Town Hall: — 1 —" That in the opinion of this meeting it would be detrimental to the interests of the miners and others that their present existing interest in the Wakatip Commonage should be sold in the jnanner proposed by the Provincial Executive, upon the terms and conditions issued and circulated by paid Executive—the day of sale being appointed for 29th April current; and it is hereby resolved accordingly that an organisation be formed for the purpose of opposing any such nale and sacrifice of existing rights at the hands of the Provincial authorities j a -.d that an appeal be made to the Colonial Government.”
2—“ That a petition he forwarded to Sir Julius Vogel, as Premier of the Colony, representing the above protest; and that the same be circulated, as far as time permits, throughout the district for signature.”
