LABOR MARKET.
Mr Skene reports that the labor market in most departments is quieter than usual at this season. Farmers have not commenced the winter work in earnest yet, and station wants are at the lowest point, while a limited few are sufficient for town wants. Couples are freely asked for. The principal inquiry now is for plain, sensible, female servants. "Wages—Couples, L6O to I*7oj ploughmen, L 65 to L6O; shepherds, L6O and L 65 j day labor, 8s and 9s; house girls, 10s to 15s per week; hotel do, 15s to 20s and 30s 5 carpenters, 11s, 12s. and 13s. Dairy and odd hands, 15a to 20s; boys and girls, Os to 10s; storemen and clerks, 36s to 60s. All the single women at the Invercargill Immigration Barracks, except two nursery maids, have found employment at wages ranging from IQs a week to LiO per annum. This, considering that tho immigrants have been in the place only four or five days, is a circumstance which reflects very favorably on the labor, abgorbing power of the district. On Thursday about twelve 0! the men found engagementa, as ploughmen and in other capacities, at rates of wages varying from 15s to Id per week.
