TAKING IT OUT OF HIM.

A new effect of the Debtors and Creditors Act became apparent at Oamaru yesterday. A meeting of the creditors of a storekeeper was held, and after the mode of procedure under the Act had been discussed, it was decided that the estate should be liquidated, and that a certain firm of solicitors should act in bringing this about. Immediately afterwards, the debtor and the solicitor betook themselves to the firm’s office. After the preliminaries had been gone through for the purpose of carrying into effect the wishes of the creditors, a creditor who had had his claim ignored appeared on the scene, and immediately upon seeing the debtor the following dialogue took place. Creditor : You gave me a bill for L2O the other day, and also borrowed LlO of me ? Debtor : Yes. Creditor ; I have come for it; I thought I’d find you here. Debtor : I cannot pay you. Creditor : Well, then, if I can’t have it one way I’ll have satisfaction another; and suiting the action to the word, he took his coat off and, calling upon the debtor to defend himself, took his satisfaotion there and then.—Wc shou d say that the following paragraph, which appears in the ‘ North Otago Times ’ had some connection with the above : “ A meeting of the creditors of Mr John Har ison, grocer, was held yesterday. The statement presented was exceedingly unsatisfactory, the debts being nearly L9OO, and the assets consisting of book debts to the amount of L 260. It was resolved that the estate be placed in liquidation under the Debtors’and Creditors’ Act, The proceedings were stormy.
