FOOTBALL.

(Per Star Pigeon Express.)

The match on the Southern Oval by the Dunedin Football Club this afternoon was between sides chosen by the captain (Mr G. M. Thomson) and deputy-captain (Mr H. Rose) of tha Club. There was a poor muster of players, and the .game was not commenced till fully half-au-hour after the appointed time. The weather was delightful, the peing, if anything, a shade too warm. Subjoined are the names of the respective teams .--Captain’s side: Messrs Thomson, Dixon. G. M. Thomson, W. Cargill, W. Mills, M'Gbee! Yalpie, and P. Cargill. Deputy-Captain’s side: Messrs Rose. J. Murray, F. E. Smith, Austin. A. Cargill, Whitsou, Dick, and J. Cargill. Some capital play was exhibited on the part of the old players, and good form was shown by a couple of promsmg colts, i’he heavy weights were on Thomson’s side who defended the town goal; Rose’a side defend, ingthe Kensingtongoal Thomson was nibbling well, and a goal, which appeared imminent, waa averted by some clever manoeuvring on Austin’s part. Somersaults, in circus style, were the order of the day. After twenty minutes’ play Rose secured a goal by some well-contrived dribbling. A change of goal was then made, and Austin saved his side the loss of a goal. The weather was very warm and oppressive. An additional player was added to each side, Fnltcn, for the deputy-captain’s side was unfortunate enough to kick the ball Just outside the goal. Austin, Murray, and Rose played capitally, contending as they were against ell the heavy-weights. About 3.40 p.m. Rose secured a second goal. Another change of goal was made, ™ the players strained every nerve to gain a goal, but without effect, the play all round exceedingly good. Soma of the players* shins were subSjted to rather rough treatment, Dickson and ills being amongst the disabled.
