ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

The council of the above society held a meeting this afternoon in the directors’ room of the ‘ Daily Times' ollice. There wove present—Messrs Murison (in the chair), A. Holmes, A. C. Begg, Aitken, Tewsley, and F. C. Fulton. The manager (Mr Deans) reported that since the l ast meeting he had liberated the following birds in various parts of the Province: —151 starlings, 192 greenfinches, 31 hedge sparrows, 14 yellow hammers, b ackb ords, English ducks, 82 Californian quail, 85 skylarks. On letters fromMr Rich and other residents in the Palmerston district, _ suggesting that steps should be taken to get the district proclaimed one for coursing, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Maitlac< d : “That his Honor the Superintendent be recommended to proclaim the mouths of May, June, and July an o<en season for coursing hares within that area bounded by the Waikouaiti river on the south, the main north road on the west, to the Horse-shoe range on the north; the license to be 60s. That his Houor be respectfully recommended to procure an amendment of the Protection of Animals Act, whereby the season for killing hares may he extended to the months of March, April, May, June, July, and August." It was further resolved to request the Superintendent to proclaim the mouths of June and July au open season for killing cock pheasants within the district proclaimed last year, tne license fee t® be 80s.

After some discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Fci.t .n, “ That steps be at once taken by the Society to procure the insertion of a clause in the Protection of Animals Act imposing an annual fee of at least one pound for every person carrying a gnu.”
