CANTERBURY AUTUMN MEETING.
Christchurch, April 18. The races were continued to-day. The weather was beautifully fine until 3 o’clock, when a slight shower of rain fell. There was, a large attendance, and, the racing was very good all through. The Autumn Handicap was a great boil over, as, after Templeton’s running yesterday, no one would have him at any price. Ten to one was freely offered against him before the start. Ariel carried a very large sum of money. Cloth of Gold was also backed heavily, and but for running against a post would have gone very near winning. The race throughout was one of the best ever seen on the course, no horse being really out of it when the lot turned the corner for home. The Selling Stakes Handicap was also a fine race, and another boil over. Mangle and Tadmor were hot favorites, Parawhenua being very little fancied. The following are the de r tailed results of the events we did not receive yesterday:—
Great Autumn Handicap, of 300 sovs, for ttiree-yr-olds and upwards, added to a sweepstake of 10 sovs each. i .... Mr Delamain’s Templeton, 5 yrs, Bst 111b,
’ Wattle 1 Mr Bnckland’s Ariel, 3 yrs, 7st 71b ... Matthews 2 Mr Redwood's Guy Fawkes, 4 yrs, 9st Lyford 3
Daniel O’Rourke, 7st 71h ; Tadmor, 7st 41b ; Elfin King, 7st 31b; Fishhook, 7st 21b; Right Bower, 7st lib; Cloth of Gold, 6st 13lb; Tattler, 6st 101b., also ran. Parawhenua, Bst 31b, and Pungawerewere, 7st 11b, were scratched.
Betting : 6 to 4 against Ariel, 3 to 1 Cloth of Gold, 5 to 1 Fishhook, 10 to 1 Right Bower and others.
After one or two false starts, caused by Ariel being fractious, a splendid start was effected. Cloth of Gold at once took the lead, with Fishhook lying second, Guy Fawkes third, and the rest all in a cluster They ran in this order till they reached the back of the course, when Templeton and Ariel came out of the ruck and gradually closed on Cloth of Gold. Turning into the straight, the latter, having a slight lead, ran against a post and cannoned on to Fishhook, and both horses fell, the rider of Cloth of Gold being rather severely hurt. After this contretemps Templeton took up the running, with Ariel on his quarters. A grand race ensued down the straight. Ariel, hard 1 ridden, looked very dangerous, but inside the rails Wattie called on Templeto*., who won cleverly by a length. Guy was a good third, and the rest well up. Time, 3min. 25sec. Templeton received quite an ovation. Sellino Stakes, of 50 sovs added to a sweepstake of 5 sovs each. Weight for age. Distance, three-quarters of a mile. Mr Watt’s Parawhenua, 6 yrs, Bst 31b ... ... 1 ■Mr Mallock’s Mangle, 2 yrs, 6st 31b ... 2 Ray’s Tadmor, 4 yrs, 6st 101b ; Hercules, 7st 31b ; Elfin King, Bst 71b; Pakeba, Bst 41b; and The Bat, Bst 51b, also ran. Betting ; 2 to 1 Mangle and Tadmor, 4 to 1 the rest.
This was a very good race to the top turn. Mangle and Tadmor led, with Parawhenua close up. Coming into the straight Parawhenua began to come, and a good race ensued between him and Mangle, but Parawhenua managed to get in first by about two -lengths. Consolation Stakes, of 40 sovs. One mile. Mr Coombes’s Right Bower, 7st 81b ... 1 Mr Studholme’sCloth of Gold, Bst ... " 2 Mr Nosworthy’s Tattler. 6s u 71b ... o This was a splendid race. Right Bower and Tattler finished a dead heat, but as the latter had run outside a post he was disqualified. The difference in Templeton’s running today as compared with yesterday is attributed to the fact that his shoes were removed this morning. His owner wins a lot of money, having backed him heavily, and bought him in sweeps. In one instance Coombes, who is partner with Delamaiu, bought Templeton in a L 230 sweep for LlB. It is rumoured that a bookmaker who not only laid against Templeton, but backed Ariel heavily, Tosses a very large amount.
