Wellington, April 1 It is understood that the Colonial Secretary and the Superintendent have received a letter signed by one Wm. H. Pearce, purporting to be from one of the workmen employed upon the Thordon reclamation. The letter makes exceedingly grave charges against the contractor. The writer urgee upon the Government to institute an inquiry, so as to prevent the probability of loss of life at a future time by the embankment falling in with a train. The letter is supposed to be a malicious plot to injure the contractor.

Christchurch, April 17. The Annual Prize Meeting of the Canterbury Rifle Association opened to-day. The weather was bad, but there was a large attendance of competitors, including three from Dunedin. The shooting was good. Lieutenant Pell, of Dunedin, tied for the first prize in the match for the President’s prizes, but was defeated in shooting off, so ic only takes second prize.

(From our own Correspondents.) • Napier, April 17. Mr A, M'Lean, of Napier, has purchased of Mr Hurtle Fisher, of Melbourne, some thorough-breds for 500 guineas, for stud purposes.

Telegrams have been received from Gisborne stating that the brig Maggie, on a voyage to Napier from Newcastle, -was wrecked on Tuesday last off the East Cape, As the Maggie arrived here on Tuesday it must be another vessel.

A storekeeper at Havelock, near Napier, wishing to help a fellow-countryman, provided a man named M‘Kay with a horse and covered car, and a quantity of goods of the value of L2OO, to hawk about the country. The last that has been heard of M‘Kay is to the effect that he has disposed of the whole lot in an “alarming sacrifice” to one M‘Donald, of Manawatu Gorge, and is now supposed to be spending the proceeds of the sale in Wellington.
