THE CHRISTCHURCH AUTUMN MEETING.
The racing in the first two events yesterday was a failure. The Trial Plato, which was considered a moral certainty for Templeton, was won easily by Rob Roy, a horse that no one who had seen him run could have thought he had the ghost of a chance. As nearly all the horses m the Trial Plate had accepted for the Autumn Handicap today, owners were loth to sand them for the small amount offered in the former race. j seven entries only Templeton and Rob Roy came to the post. Th* former appeared out of all form, and was beaten the pot thus boiling over with a vonfeance. The St. Leger was a walk-over for ungawerewere, Daniel O’Rourke, the only other acceptor out of fourteen subscribers heingreserved for theGreatAntuniTi for which the owner thinks he has a good chance. Many had backed Daniel for the St. Leger, and notwithstanding that Bst 101b would have been a stiff weight for such a little horse, he would have pushed Pungawerewere hard—more especially as the latter did not appear at all there. The Champagne Stakes brought four nice babies to faOe the starter. Dead Heat has been at work for six months,' and his running proved he wil no mean animal. Richardson will, in fact, have a rare good colt in Dead Heat for the
Wttt Derby, which ho has bean heavily hocked to win. The Ada Colt has come much into favor lately, from reports of trials, and Bob Bay having the mount. He ran splwuiidly, but owes his win entirely to Ray’s riding. Songster was thought to have a good show for the race, but somehow Skybird’s stock never answer the expectations of their friends; although possessing more than average speed, they lack staying powers. The Fair Agnes colt is a powerful youngster, and will make a useful horse next year. The Tantrums colt is a fine animal, and will be Serene at the Spring Meeting. The esmen’s Handicap is a race about which there has been any amount of growling ever since the weights came out, Delamain’s two were said to be chucked in, and Guy Fawkes, Tadmor, and Fishhook crushed out. The result of the race must be very flattering to Mr Stead, the handicapper, as Delamain’s two were nowhere, while Guy Fawkes, Tadmor, and Pishook were the only ones that showed in the race. The following are details of the only race the result of which we did not receive yesterday : TBAnismnt'a Puts Handicap, of 100 sots. Bis* tance, one mile. Sedwood’a Guy Fawkes, 4 yrs, 9st 11b (T. Lyford) 1 O’Brien’s Fishhook, 8 yrs, 7st 51b... (E. Derritt) 2 Watt’s Parawbenua, Bst 51b; Bay’s Tadmor, 7 Eft 131b; M‘lvor’s Hercules, 7st 91b; Delamain’s Pungawerewere, 7st 51b; Delamain’s FUfin King, 7st 31b; Nosworthy’s Tattler, Vst; Shand’s The Chief, 6st; and Shand’s Wild Bose, Sat 71b, also ran. Betting: 3to 2 agamst Guy Fawkes, 3to 1 against Tavdmor and Elfin King. While taking a preliminary canter Wild Bose bolted, and took a couple of turns round the course before she could be stopped. On coming t'o the post, two false starts occurred. On i>he fall of the flag, Guy Fawkes cut out the ruuming, with Fishhook close up, Tadmor lying third, Elfin King last but one, and Tattler bust. At the bottom of the coarse Fishhook - , went to the front, but coming into the straight, Guy and Tadmor closed upon him, all three jockeys riding their best. Ah the distance-post Tadmor fell back beaten ; Fishhook had a slight lead of Guy Fawkes, but nearing home the latter came agai!n, and after a splendid struggle finished a dead heat with Fishhook. Time, Imin. 48|st?o. Subsequently Fishhook was scratched, and Guy Fawkes walked over, to the great disappointment of many.
