Monday, April 17. (Before V. Pyke, Esq., J.P.)
- Drunkenness. —Mary Carr was fined ss; Archibald M'Leod, William Lambert, and John Gleeson were all fined 10s, in default 3 days’ imprisonment; Peter Reitz 40s, or 14 days’. A charge of habitual drunkenness against the last-named offender was dismissed, the Bench holding that he did not come within the meaning of the Act. Wm, Mullen surrended to his bail on a charge of drunkenness. As prisoner was still drunk the charge was remanded till to-morrow, bail being refused. Vagrancy. —Mary Dillon, an abandoned character, was charged with drunkenness and having no lawful' means of support. Prisoner admitted the latter charge only. His Worship considered the two offences one and sentenced the prisoner to 3 months' imprisonment with hard labor. Embezzlement. -Edward Gillott Beckeiton was charged on remind with embezzling moneys at Oamaru.—lnspector Mallard said that the warrant had been received, and lie asked that prisoner be remanded to Oamaru. —Prisoner asked to be released on bail.—lnspector Mallard stated the magistrate at Uamaru, who issued the warrant, in reply to a telegram sent by accused’s counsel, had telegraphed, “Extent Beckertou’s fraud not ascertained. Accept bail, himself L2OO, two sureties L 100.” The solicitor had informed him that it was impossible to find bondsmen in Dunedin to that extent.—Prisoner was remanded to Oamaru, to appear there on Thursday next. Breaking Windows. —Tho.<. Seale, for breaking two panes of glass in the Prince of Wales Hotel, was fined 2s (id, and ordered to pay the damage done (11s.) Remand Charge. —Chas. Coleman, charged with stealing two pigeons, was further remanded till to-morrow.
