CITY POLICE COURT.
Saturday, April 15. (Before V. Fyke, Esq., 8.M.) Drunkenness. John White, Thomas Griffen, William Armitage, Samuel Gill, and John Alien were all fined ss, with the usual alternative. Obscene Language.- -Mary Ann Heffernan, for using obscene language in what was described by his Worship as “ the old place ” (the Devil’s Half-Acre), was fined 40s, in default seven days’ imprisonment. Alleged Embezzlement.— Edward Gillott Bickerton was charged with embezzling L 6 Is 6d, the money of John Milne, of Oamaru.— Inspector Mallard produced a telegram from Oamaru; and in the absence of the warrant, asked for a remand till Tuesday.—Mr Edwards, who defended, asked that prisoner be liberated on bail.—Mr Fyke pointed out that in the absence of any information the accused could only be detained in custody. The magistrate, before signing the warrant, must have become acquainted with the facts of the case. The remand till Tuesday was granted.
