FIRE BRIGADE.
To the Editor. *.V‘ \ Sir,— ln reading the afeport of the tate meeting of the City Council in your isauXof the llth inst. ; I was greatly surprised at the decision the Council arrived at with reference to a detachment of the Brigade being selected bo proceed to Ballarat —providing sufficient funds can be raised to expenses—-to join in the united Fire Brigade:' demonstration, which is to be held''at that place on the 24th of May next. With year permission, sir, I will make a few re'marks on behalf of the Brigade. First,'in reference to the excuses set up by the Council, which, in my opinion, are vejry lame ones, seeing that they have only been asked to contribute towards the men’s expenses. Now, the Council admit that if the men were to go over some good would begaine* 1. The Brigade themselves, and I take the members to be as good judges as any of the Council, had no hesitation in affirming the desirability of sending eight of their number over, which implies the belief that they are of opinion their services can be well spared. By implication, also, the Insurance Com- • panics (who after all are most interested) show by liberal donations that they do not think the efficiency of the Brigade will be impaired. The first excuse-the youth of the Brigade—is absurd on the face of it. But apart from that I say, without fear of contradiction, that there are in the present Brigade men as good and as efficient as any in the old Brigade, and I feel confident, if the funds are raised, and the men do go, that they will carry themselves with credit to the City that sent them and the body they belong to. I trust the public will come forward and show their willingness to assist the movement. —I am, &c„ . Subscriber, Xhuwdin, April Is.
