VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
The Artillery Company’s first review took place yesterday, and proved a thorough success. The battery and baud started by the 7 a.m. train for Milton, and arrived there at about twenty minutes past nine, where they were cordially welcomed by a large concourse of the residents. After the band bad played a couple of airs the battery proceeded to a large paddock, about three miles from the railway station, kindly lent by Mr Dunn for the occasion, and commenced a series of shot and shell practice, &c., the band playing at Intervals. They then adjourned to Atkinson’s Hotel, where they were well entertained, and returned to Dunedin by the 6.30 train. Thirty-one members of the North Dunedin Rifles competed at the Anderson’s Bay range yesterday for the cups presented to the company by Captain Reeves. The members had been told on into seven squads of six men each, and the result proved that No. 6 squad beat No. 1 by 54 points, No 5 beat No. 3 by 26 points, No. 4 beat No. 2, not having competed. The ranges were 200, 400, and 600 yards, five shots at each; standing position at 200. yards; any position at other ranges ; the lowest score in either of the competing teams to count for absentees. The next competition will be between the three successful squads, Nos. 4, 5, and 6, who will fire together, the marksmen themselves to decide whether the highest scorers in this match are to be declared the winners or the two highest squads to have another contest. The oft - deferred match between ten members of the Clutha Rifles and a like number of the No. Company was fired at Balclntba yesterday afternoon. The ranges were 200, 400, and 500 yards; five shots at each. Both teams were treated to a champagne lunch by Captain Fillans, of Balclutha, at Stanbrook’s Hotel at the conclusion of the match. Subjoined are the scores, from which it will be seen the match resulted in a victory for the Clutha team by 14 points:—
