(By Telegraph.) (From our Social Ji-portei’.) FIRST DAY, The weather was very boisterous last night, with rain, but cleared up this moming, though a stiff gale has been blowing all day. In the Calcutta sweeps at Dunne’s, last evening, King Philip was bought at even money for the Handicap, Glengarry also fetching a good price. About 200 people were present on the course, but that number did not include many visitors from the neighborhood or Dunedin. The grand stand consisted of a ’bus. The course was in fair order, but the horses were hidden from view by the scrub for half a mile. King Philip then led, Glengarry laying a length behind him. Going round the latter closed with the King, and stuck to him for three-quarters of a mile. Cotton then commenced to ride his horse, who answered gamely, as usual, and won tinder the whip by a bark'length ; Sir William came well at the finish and made a good third, Steamer being nowhere. Time, 2min 53sec.

A protest has been lodged against King Philip on the ground of jostling coming up the straight, and its consideration has been adjourned till this evening, but it is thought it will not come to anything.
