David Nesbit, well-known as “ Scotch Jock,” one of the principal importers of Clydesdales in the Colonies, died very suddenly. He was well known in New Zealand.
Heavy rain has fallen in parts of the Colony. A private London telegram mentions a fall of 2dt per lb on greasy wool. The cable between Madras and Penang is still interrupted. Nothing is yet known as to the whereabouts of the fault. Meanwhile, telegrams are being received via Siberia.
The salmon ova have not been a success. A large percentage has died. Sir Samuel Wilson has telegraphed Home for another small shipment from the hatching establishment in Stormontfieldt, It is not to be shipped until the eyes of the young fry are visible. The shipment will come via Suez. Every means are being taken to raise funds towards sending a Rifle team to Philadelphia and Wimbledon. Parliament, after a session of eleven months, will he prorogued to-morrow; only one Bill of any consequence has been passed. It is the Long Loan Bill for L 2,800,000 for railway construction, the erection of school buildings, and water-works. Parliament must meet again in June. Scenes in the Assembly are looked for now regularly. The new Government House is to be ready for occupation in June.
