SERIOUS ASSAULT.
This morning, Mr John Barnes, the Inspector of City Works, was assaulted in a very savage manner by a man named Thomas, who is the contractor under the Corporation for laying down kerbing in Clyde street north, near the bridge. It appears that shortly before nine o’clock this morning, Mr Barnes was inspecting the work, and gave orders for the “tipping” of a cart - load of sand on a , certain spot. Thomas declining to carry out the order, Mr Barnes himself withdrew the pin and upturned the cart, whereupon Thomas struck him on the head with the iron part of the shovel he held in his hand. The blow felled Mr Barnes to the ground, and blood flowed pretty freely from the wound, which was, to the appearance of the witnesses of the affair, a severe one. He was at once lifted into his buggy and conveyed to his residence, where he was attended by Dr Richardson, who stated in the Police Court that Mr Barnes had been-delirious ever since, and now lies in a dangerous state. Meanwhile, Thdmas remains in custody, bail having been refused by the Bench.
