THE DUNEDIN SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The committee’s fortnightly night was attended by Messrs Robin (in ihe chair), Strode, Bell, Ramsay, Fish, Livingston, and Sherwin; and the following bum* ness was transacted. f *;• The head masters forwarded their opinion relative to Pitman’s shorthand being, taught in the district schools. They though!; it would be a good subject for tuition ifit did not interfere with other scholastic studies. Messrs Bell and Fish were appointed to wrft upon the head matters to elicit their true opinions on the subject. Mr Fish in moving, “ That in future the holidays to be observed in the schools within the Oily of Dunedin be ; as follows One month at midsummer, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Pres byterian Fast Days, 23rd March (Anniversary Days, Queen’s Birthday, PHnoe of Wales’s Birthday, and sue days, midwinter, commencing the last Monday in the June quarter; land that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the master of each school,” expressed his disapproval of the fast-days being regarded as School holidays, and remarked, with .reference, to tine Normal School, which had been alluded to, that when Provincialism was a thing of the past, which it soon would be, the school would, in all probability, be in % Ike hands of a local committee.—The ' Secretary. (Mr James) reported that Mr Fitzgerald, Rector of the Normal School, had intimated that he would act upon the committee’s decision in reference to school holidays.—The motion was earned. It was further resolved—- “ That, in the event of any unforseen emergency arising, the chairman for the time being be empowered to sanction any additional holiday he may deem necessary.” The returns for the four schools for the past quarter were reported to be as follows s —South School, attendance 870, fees L 123 j! BdJ North School, 478, L 207 GalOd; Middle, 198, L 52 10s; Albany street, 269, L 97 19s 6d. Total attendance, 1,315, ps against 1,999 for last quarter; total few, L4BI 2s, as against L 685 18s last quarter. Of the fees received about LBO wasfor fern due to December, 1875. On a letter from Miss Fraser, ‘ Albanry Street School,, calling attention to the amount of her salary from the falling off iin the fees, it was resolved, as there appeared to be a falling off in the salaries at" theother schools, that the Ch Rinnan and Trcaisiu* or confer and report to next meeting as to arty extra division of fees to be made. Mr Halliwell’s resignation as headmaster of the Middle School was accepted, and it was agreed he should receive the he; id masters fees for the coming quarter, i 7fhe question of successor to Mr Halliwell to be left in the hands of the Chairman, to nonsuit with the Secretary of' the Education Board. Mr James Hendry, at present third master of the South School, was, on the recommendation of Mr Ferguson, head-master of (die Albany street School, appointed thi’rd uniter of that school. Mr Stewart’s (Nor'fch School) recommendation of Miss Ellen A) «v.T.4 pr a pupil-teacher, vice Miss Battsfin resichod. was ordered to be forwarded toj the Education Board in the usual manner, 1 ?
