THE HEBREW SCHOOL.

The annual’ meeting of the Jewish congregation, for the purpose of receiving the report of the master of the school (the Eev. B. Lichenstein) and electing two members of committee, was held in Synagogue Chambers yesterday forenoon; the president of the congregation (Mr J. Hyman) in the chair. The report made mention of the marlrnd progress of the school, which was opened on the 9th of May last with an attendance of forty-three, and now there were forty nine pupils on the roll, the majority of whom are able to read and translate Hebrew. Votes of thanks were accorded to the master and to his honoriuy assistants, Misses Metz and' Friedlisoh, Messrs Naphtha!! and Levi, There wer%£hree candidates for committeemen, and Messrs B. Isaac and Benjamin were elected. ■ In the afternoon there was a public examination of the pupils, who. demonstrated to the satisfaction of their parents and friends that their knowledge m Scripture history and ability to read and translate were well grounded and fully bore out the statements as to their progress .made earlier in the day. Then; fol-< lowed the more pleasant part (to the children) of distr butiug the prizes, the principal of which—a silver medal presented by Kohn and Co.—fell to Master Joseph Moss, as dux of the senior class. Miss Metz, the teacher of the Sabbath School, wasthe recipient of a handsome locket from her female pupils us a token of their esteem.
