The Southland papers bring under the notice of the Government the case of Constable Boyce, which is certainly a very sad one. Two years ago Boyce, while on duty at Woodlands, where he was then stationed, met with an injury which is likely to-be permanent. While pursuing a prisoner, whom he subsequently apprehended, his horse threw him, and he sustained some injury to one of his legs, but he failed to have prompt medical attention, the consequence being that when it was attempted to re-set the joint it was found that some ligament or tissue had taken up a position between the joint and the socket. Of course, Boyce, being unfit for duty, had to leave the force. •Ho was removed to the Dunedin Hospital, but he did not: succeed in obtaining effectual treatment, for Whaa lately gone to the Lot springs at lloloumhaua, in the North Island; in the hope of getting some relief. Mean,* time, his wife and family are in desperate straits. \

The Superintendent of Westland has revived letters from Switzerland, and from their tenor it appears that a number of Swiss are desirous of emigrating to that part el the Colony. The weekly meeting of the All Saints' Young Men’s Association was held in the schoolroom last evening; the president in the chair. Mr George Henry read an interesting paper on a “Future Existence,” going into the subject of a life beyond the grave and what the Bible says about it. •Some discussion arose about the future body, after which the meeting terminated. The Opposition Press is urging an inquiry by Parliament into the conduct and manage* ment of the Agent-General’s department. The ‘Clutha Leader,’ with charming innocence, suggests .that if it be considered requisite to remove Dr Peatherston, or if he should retire, probably it might be advan*. tageous to the Colony to make Mr James Adam, the Provincial Emigration Agent, Agent-General for the Colony. A crystalised quartz reef has recently been discovered oh the Benger ranges, about two miles from the “Old Man.” The prospector, Mr Morau, a Swiss, well-known on the! Molyneux, informs the ‘Clutha Leader’ that the reef is fourteen inches broad, and underlies to the westward. . He found gold in the casing of both sides. Morau and party have obtained a prospecting claim of 800 feet long by 300 feet broad. Ordinary claims have been taken up by other miners along the reef.

Ihe delay has been caused by the constant flow of counter attractions since the 11th inst. The proceed of the entertainment will be applied as a benefit to the promoter of the tournament.
