CITY COUNCIL.
At the usual fortnightly meeting of the Connell this afternoon, when thece.were present the mayor (in the chair), ConncilldfS Gibson, Brown, Chapman, Woodland, Grant, Leary, Keoves, the following business was transacted: — ' Among the correspondence read was a letter irom Mr Gordon requesting certain information as to tno water supply.—The mayor stated that all the required imormation had been prepared by Mr M‘Gregor and would be forwarded Cr. Ekevis inquired whatpopnlatmn Mr M Gregors calculations were based upon.—’Die Mayor: That is the only question to be answered. I put it down at 150,000.—Cr. Bbevbs :It should not bo less than 100,000. „ Messrs O’Neill and Co. offered to lay down a system of tramways (the cars to.be driven by steam power) along the principal streets of the city from Anderson’s Bay to the Water tions similar to those on which they had engaged to lay down tramways in Wellington. f Tlie manager of the Evening News wrote that he considered that his, having been the only tender for the Corporation advertising, shon'd have, been accepted. Cr. Isaac expressed the opinion that the •News’* tender being the lowest mid only one, should he accepted, as wa? generally done, but the , rest of the Council did not coi2 cide T™ 1 matter was referred to the FinancC Committee. „ On the Fire Brigade’s letter, asking w 16 potmoil s assistance towards sending a detachment , or men to the Fire Brigades demonstration at -T al " 4 larat in May next being read, Cr. Qibsoh said he thought Councillors should express their opinions on the matter; bat Cr, Isaac thought it weald be Imprudent to disouss the matter in Council.—The letter was referred to the Brigade Committee. The Finance Committee reported (1) re Princes street widening, recommending that notice to quit be duly served, upon the following Corporation tenants, whose holdings of portions of the Princes
street reserve, north of Police street, cannot be regarded as other than annual, viz., Messrs Marsden and Kennedy, but that the committee should hare power to hegeciate with all the tenants north of Police street separately, with a view to the early removal of their buildings and the widening of the street any final action herein to be necessarily taken only by the ...Council as a whole. (2) That Mrs Ann .Wise's request for monetary' compensation for her late husband’s death through an accident with an express at Canongate be declined, the committee not considering it advisable that the Council should admit any liability in the matter. (8.) Cheques for the balance of the compensation to the Manse street tenants have been handed to the City. Solicitors for payment to the Manse tenants so’aoon as all necessary documents be executed and the' covenants of the agreements re Princes street: widening completed on the parts of the said tenants. Accounts had been passed amounting t0L7,707, of which L 7.412 was on account of the widening of Princes street.
. The. Sanitary Committee'.reported having had an interview with Mr Chaplin relative to the establishment of a manure depot on his land near the Sandhills, and the following conditions were mutually agreed upon, subject to confirmation by the Council The Council to defend atty legal proceedings taken against Mr Chaplin in respect to the manure depot; only night soil, stable manure, and dead animals to be taken: rent, LIOO per nnunm and all fees; should the a *pot be decided to be a nuisance, the agreement to bo cancelled. Upon the above basis the Committee recommended that a two years’ agreement be entered into, with a right to the Council to Extend the term for another year. The Works Committee recommended— (1.) That the Provincial Government’s proposal to charge the Council a sum of L 250 for the slight work necessary to be undertaken to abate several nuisances along the Port Bailway line through the Wharves and Quarries Beserve, be declined; (2.) that a steam roller be obtained from Melbourne at a cost of from 1600 to L7OO, but that prior to the order being forwarded, full particulars be procured and placed before the .Council in a further report p (3.) tfaat -Mr Crawahaw’a tender for the Town Belt drive be now accepted, provided he be willing to proceed therewith, and that should he decline to do so, fresh tenders be called for the work. (This Matter has been in abeyance, pending the negotiation of the loan. (4) The Surveyor has been instructed to form the footpath on the east side of ranees street, where the street is to be widened abutting the Manse reserve. Beplies have been
sent as follow:—To Mr Pish, that the Council's stone-crushing operations at Serpentine Avenue are not of a permanent nature, and that in all likelihood the machine will be removed therefrom in about a month's time; and to Mrs Flanagan, that too Council cannot at present interfere in the matter of. top smoke nuisance complained of by her at High street. Messrs Matheson Bros.’ tender for toe sewer under a portion of Cumberland street yor 1514 10s) had been accepted, subject to their amt furnishing a satisfactory schedule of extras. . The Eeserves Committee recommended:—(l) liat toe City Council be instructed to prepare a lease of Mr Scoullar's present holding.
