Four false starts were made, owing to Wee Lad’s disinclination to start. At last a capii’al one was obtained, and past the stand Fishhook, Parawhenua, and Wee Lad led abreast, Pungawerewere next, Steamer and C lay Fawkes close up. Going round the con rse Fishhook gradually drew away from the field, but opposite the stand all closed up toj ijether. Again Fishhook left a gap between himself and the others, but just before enter, tag the straight Guy. Fawkes answered gamebv to his rider’s call, and looked as u he wo uld overhaul the leader. Lyford, however, bad to pull out the whip’td him, and tiring ' under his weight he allowed Fishhook to come in a rather easy winner by three lon 4 gths ; Wee Lad a good third, Steamer fourth, Parawhenua fifth, Pungawerewere, wlio ran last nearly all the way, coming in half a dozen lengths behind him. Time, 2min The result was a slice of luck for the bookmakers as Fishhook had not been backed i e o.r much. Benevolent Soueet, for ® purse of sovs. One mile and a distance. Betting; Even against Glengarry ;3to 2 Wee Lad; 3to 1 anything’ else. A capital' start, Hector,: Wee Lad, and Pakeha cutting' out the run uing. Wee Lad then took a decided lead, but at a mile Glengarry came up witir a v ret sheet, passed his horseSv and collared Lad. A fine race ensued -up the straight., But Glengarry had always the best of it, and won by a short head. Hector was thir d. Elfin King and Steamer cut out" the " running, making the pace hot; but at the opposite side of the course Right Bower came up with a'rash, passed Steamer and challenged Elfin King. The latter was not to Bk demhd, howeter;/and though the Bower ran a Very game horise up the straight’ under r the .whip,, the King won an exciting race by a'short Read. . Steamer was a fair third.
