The New Year’s receptions in the United States have led to a novel but somewhat useful custom. Most jour* nals of the provincial towns contain on the previous day a list of the ladies who will be at home for the while in another column are the names of those who are prevented from receiving by sickness, absence, domestic affliction, &c. This prevents a great loss of time and trouble to those whose acquaintance is numerous.
