During the last few weeks th-re have been continual a ts of indecency in the Botanical Gardens, but th- Curator was unable to identify the cul )ri*s. Last night he caught a couple, highly respectable in appearance, who are strangers ia Wellington, indulging in impr.pe” familiarities in the gardens. They were brou ht b -fore the Resident Magistrate this morning, and each s- ntenced to one calendar month’s impr sonment with hard labor. Ihe severity of ihe sentence excited sympathy, as the case was not a bad one. The couple intended getting m ir.ied in a week, while worse cases have been allowed to pass unnoticed; the offenders being ie a good position here, ihe ma’e prisoner in this case formerly was a bank manager and is now a commercial traveller. A deputation is to wait ou the Minist r of Justice to endeavor to a mitigation of the sentence. The ‘Evo i g Po.-t, which a few days ago severely censured indecency in the gardens bring allowed to continue, to-night points out th -.t the sentence was needlessly severe under the f i corns' ances of the case. Assumed names are given. t ■——■■—
