Commercial.

The following we extract from the Christchurch *Pi ess* of 13th inst. s—“ It will be gratifying td the farmers to learn that two local firms have chartered two large vessels to bring upwards of 8,000 bales comsacks from Calcutta. As sacks from Calcutta can be landed here considerably cheaper than Dundees, it really means so much additional price to the fanners for their grain, as the cost of sacks undoubtedly comes out of the grain producers' pockets, now that sacks are given in in Australia. These shipments must quite shut out importations ol Dundee goods." With reference to the above, we understand that the vessels will call at hort Chalmers to land a considerable portion of their cargoes for sale in this market, as it is’believed the shipments will be ample for the require* ments of both Otago and Canterbury next seasonmore especially as the supply for this season in both places is excessive, and considerable stocks will have<to be held over.

Mr Henrt Drives (on behalf of the N.Z.L. and M.A. Company) reports for the week ending 22nd March:— Wool.—We offered a small catalogue at onr usual weekly auction this afternoon, which sold fully up to last week's rates. Sheepskins were in small supply, and sold at about last week’s prices. Butcher’s pelts, Is 3d to Issd; lambs, Is 6d to 2s 2d; station skins, 6M per lb. ■ Tallow.—We sold a few tons of country rendered at 26s to 28s 6d. Groin.—Wheat continues in good demand for prompt delivery at 4s 4d to 4s 6a for fair to good milling; very choice, 4s Bd. Oats have been much sought after during the week to fulfil some shipping orders. We. have placed new feed grain at Is 9d to Is lOd. We do not expect these rates to le maintained when a better supply reaches the market. Barley, good malting, is in demand at 4s Ol to 4s 9d; a very choice well-cleaned sample will command ss; inferior, quite neglected—prices nominal.
