COCK-A-DOODLE-DO!
(Tothe Cock of the Starry Walk.)
Cock-a-deodle do !—Pardon (his exuberance of spirit, I am only a cock; and ’(is thus we feathered bipeds salute our friends and challenge our enemies. Do not you unfeathered bipeds imitate us herein ? I was delighted to hear my brother chantie’eer (f the ‘D. T.’jroostery crowing so bravely this morning. He is a cock of great pluck, and so . intensely wise in appearance “in arper.ranee,” m-;rk you, “only that and nothing more”—that he has sometimes been mistaken for Minerva’s solemn bird. Chanticleer doesn’t want any “ unpleasant complications” in his hen roost, so he croweth forth lusti'y—“ with the utmost pLinuess and the most uncompromising firmness ” —that he and bis chickens have ; ot their grub and they “mem to keep it.” Not al the king’s horses and all the king’s men will take it from them. —Cock-a-doodle-do! The-e be “ prave words,” my mst rs, .nd, look you, chanticleer i- a “ law abiding ” rooster so long as he is allowed to have everything his own way ; and after his Fashion he regards “ with horror and dismay anythin.' that even to appearance looks like a resistance to the law.” (By the way, how does any hir.g ‘ look ” when it does not present an “ appearance ?) But let the distant foe beware! The e is ** no power in New Zealand,” feathered or unfeatbered, “sufficiently strong” to take the cor’ out of his “grasp” And aga ; n ( say, op rather sing—Cock-a-doodle-do ! Only let ’em come on, that’s at], and then you sha lsee this “prave pird,” lock you, rending them to small pieces in defence of his ancestral dunshill and maternal hen-roost. What is it to him if ten thousand chickens have no food, mental or material, so ioi;g as his own little ones are gorged to rep’etiou. Yet there is a legend in onr family of a certain HumptyDumpty who eat on s, wall and got a big fall, and never pulled himself together again. Dhantdeer is a lineal descendant of this same Hum; ty-Dumpty, and may get as big a fall if he is too rash.—Yours eggs-actly, COCK-A-DOODLE-DO. Dunedin, March 22.
An action has been entered against the Cromwell Corporation wherein the plaintiff —a Clyde resident seeks LSOO damages for injuries sustained by his wife in Melmore Terrace, owing to an alleged neglect of the Municipal body. The • Argus ’ says the case will probably be tried at the next sitting of the District Court. The injury was sustained over twelve months ago, and is said to be of a permanent nature. “ Mr Vardy, a Sydney solicitors gives the following explanation,” states the ‘Echo,’ “in connection with his filed schedule : ‘My insolvency arises from falling off and injury to my practice as solicitor, caused, I verily believe, by a series of libels and slan ders published and uttered by certain newspaper proprietors, magistrates, attorneys attending at the Sydney police courts, police constables, and others.” “ Prompter ” informs us that the HoskinsColville Company are now performing in Wellington, and that Reel’s troupe of performing dogs and monkeys are on their way south. At the conclusion of his Season in Christchurch Mr Hoskins gave a complimentary supper to the working hands of the theatre. Val Vose has left the Colonies and with Madame Cora proceeded to South Africa in the St Osyth on her last trip. The Rey. Charles Clark will visit Auckland shortly en route for America whither he will be accompanied by his indefatigable agent, R. S. Smytho. '
