AN AUSTRALIAN PRIMA DONNA.

In a letter placed at our disposal, dated from Leghorn on the 2nd December, 1875, we find that Miss Emma Howson made her debut before an Italian audience last November at the Royal Rossini Theatre in that place in the* role of “ Dinorah,” and that “she achieved a splendid success, haying been called before the curtain' after each act, and for the celebrated waltz, ‘ Ombra Leggiera,’ three times. . . . The second opera given yras ‘La Son-, nambula,’ and her succepk in this was still greater than in ‘ Dinorah,’ her singing being interrupted by cries of of ‘ Brava,* * Bene,* and calls out innumerable. The grand finale to the second act, ‘ D’un pensiero,’ has been encored every representation ) and her last rondo , finale, *Ah non giunge,’ brought down the hotise. The benefit took place on the 37th, with * Sonnambula,’ and after the second act she sang the ‘ Variations of Rode,’ written for the violin. Splendid bouquets and a magnificent album were presented to her, and the whole affair was highly satisfactory.** We learn from the same source that, after having increased alike her reputation and her'repertory in Italy, she thinks of returning some day to Australia, where, with a name well known and liked, and as a cultivated singer both in Italian and English, she will surely find herself welcome.— ‘ Argus.
