AMUSEMENTS.
THE CIECUS. The Circus was not so well attended last evening, owing, no doubt, to the boisterous weather. Nevertheless, a capital programme was gone through, which well those who visited the marquee. Dick Turpin's Bide to York brought the entertainment to a close, and we may say that it has never been Produced in Dunedin better than it was last night, tr Kingsley -makes a good Dick Turpin, and Mr : Gonzales a capital Tom King. As this company's : B *oy io Dunedin is’ but’ for a few nights more, we would advise those ’who have not had the opportunity of seeing it to avail themselves-of this. THE OPEBA. ;* At the Queen's Theatre last evening the Simonsen Opera Troupe gave a second performance of : “ The Grand Duchess." Although heavy rain was falling all the evening, there was a very good house, and' the atmosphere inside was very oppressive. Wo understand that arrangements have been .per-, fected to-day. for.improving the ventilation of the building. The opera went much better yesterday ; than on the first night, the ; choruses especiilly showing more evenness and finish. Miss Lambert played throughout with animation and • vivacity, and • she was particularly applauded lor her efforts in the scene with Fritz in the first act. Madame Simousen was in excellent voice, and narrowly escaped on encore for. the well: known aria "Lo! Here the Sabre of my Sire," and •‘Sar tp Him," thq latter being given with great sweetness and pathps.. Signor Morley’s Fritz was not entirely satisfactory, that gentleman evidently suffering from a cold, and the consequence was that his voice did not tell to the beet advantage. -He was most successful in the solo after the return from thewar, and n the duet in the third act with Miss Lambert—“. 4 t6Ur a- tSte.” Mr Markham was amusing as Baron Pock, and Mr Tomholt played and sang the grotesque character of General Boom in a proper spirit. The Istterqudrtotte by the maids of honor was exceedingly' woll given, and was mnch appreciated by the audience. This evening “ Lucia di Lammermoor “ will bo performed in Italian, and a great, treat toay be anticipated, as some members of. the; company will appear in their best, characters. Madaipo Simohsen will fake the part of Lucia, and Signor Motley thot of Edeardo; Mr Albert Richardson will appear as Alfredo.
BLOJNDIN’S PERFORMANCE. f
The threatening state of the weather doubtless prevented a large attendance at Kensington yesterday afternoon. But if Blondin’s visitors were not numerous, they were enthusiastic, and preferred a : drenching to missing any of the marvellous things they came to see. The feats of Saturday, oven to the chair trick and carrying M, Niaud across were repeated with the ease and thorough absence of fear which characterise Blondin’a performances. To-day is .the last afternoon exhibition, but tortflfiFSfv he appears for the first time at night a pyroteclmieal• display. This should prove an attraction—and perhaps those who have hitherto enjoyed on the cheep from the hills a view of Blondiu's performances, may be induced to enter his tent and see him at hia best.
