THE WASTE LAND BOARD AND MR MARTIN’S APPOINTMENT.

To the Editor. Can such things, be, and overcome us like a summer olotid, without our special wonder?— Shakespeare. Slßj—Gn reading over your report of the proceeding of the above Board in your last night’s Issue, I was greatly surprised to read of the attempt to foist on the community a - permanent auctioneer, in the person of Mr R, 8.. Martin, to the disadvantage and illtreatment of the gentleman who at present occupies that position. T allude to Mr James Milner, who has, since holding the position, given, I u-idersta*d, geserai satisfaction. Far be it from me to detract in any way in ireig Mr Martin provided for, but aa a Citizen I mbst say that if,any such permanent appointment i* to be mate let it tie open and above board so that each and all of thp=e gentlemen who pay a large license to the Government, may have a opportunity of applying. Truly, sir, if there was, or comd be, any reason given why Provincialism should cease the above attempt at ctiquism or nepotism must go far even with the mo it rab’d Provin-ciali-t to show that such conduct on the pare of the so-cal f ed Executive is detrimental to their position and unworthy of their mist. Believing the Waste Land Board will acH Ihe honorable and impartial part they have hitherto done in all ma ters presented to them for consideration, I am, &c,, T. B, Dunedin, March 9.
