WATER.

To the Editor,

Sib- In your issue of 7th iast. Ino iced a ie ter signed “ Parent.” an 1 in reply thereto beg to inform him that the Corporation of Dunedin had_ not nearly sufficient water to supply the City of Dunedin, -e'. alone any of the outside municipalities or townships; tilts fact I gathered from a letter which apps red in the ‘Guardian’ some eight or fen days’ since, stating that the re id nts of the higher parts of Hish Ward intend refusing <o pay the water rates, and to contest the matter, if necessary, on account of the short Supply of water. I havo.no hcsUatu-n in stating that had all the citizens of DuneJin received a proper supply.during the ptist month that the reservoir would have been almost, if not quite, empty ere now, and as it is, it will take but a few days to empty. Under these s, how can ‘Parent” expect 'he pres-.nt Water works autho ities to supply “Forbu y,” or any other towi sli : p, with water. The Corporation of Dunedin obtained ihe power la-rt se-sion of * arhament lo take the Water-of-Leith for the suppy of the Ci‘y, but from the fact of their having tak-n no action in the matter I presume it is their intention to allow their Bill to lapse. I would, therefore, as a resident on the flat strongly recommend all the outside municipalities and townships to unite together and obtain powers at the next meeting of Parliament to take the Water of Leith, a stream which will give an ample supp’y of good pure water, and the surplus, afner supplying all our own requirements, can be easily sold for motive power, &o. I an sure the venture would ultimately yield a large fortune to those under'akin 3 it, and I w -ulcl, therefore, strongly urge tlxe scheme to their immediate consideration,so that they may have time to prepare their Bill and to arrange with those pent ns having any claim to the water.—l am, &o.
