At yesterday’s meeting of the Senate of the New ‘{Zealand University the only business transacted was thO appointment of a committee to investigate matters connected*, with the, s auranga and Taranaki reserves for the University and to report as to what steps sbou I dhe taken by legislative enactment to vest these reeeves in trustees, and to secure the utilisation of them for the purposes for which they were made. The much vexed question of public buildings for Christchurch appears likely to be settled at last. The Hon; E. f Richardson has promised >he City Council that on his return to Wellington steps should be taken without delay for the immediate erection of the buildings, which are to cost L 14.000. A butcher named John Storey committed suicide by hanging himself last nigh*. The cau r e of the act is unknown.

The narrow gauge communication direct from Christchurch to Timaru was opened yes* terday. Hitherto, there has been a most inconvenient break of gauge at Rolleston, sixteen miles from Christchurch. ' The dramatic season of the Hoakins-Colville company concludes to-morrow night, when Sir Cracroft Wilson, on behalf of a number of subscribers, will present Miss Colville with a handsome testimouial.
