THE DUNEDIN CUP.
Mr F. R. White’s b g Atla*, aged, by The Peer—Batbary, 7*t 4P, c*z&e* uexfc on the bub as he has not been entered for anything rise at the meet ng he is an unlikely accepter and will not require our att nton. Hs is as well bred as a ytbiii" in the race, but is now nea ly twelve y* ars old and has not shown good form for some time p »Ht. Mr P. Campbells hr c Tatt'er, 3 yrs, by Ravensworth—Deception, 7st 3b, ia half•hrothcr to Traitor, _ who ran third in ‘ last year’s Cup. At Christchurch Spring Meeting he ran second to K rari fo- the Ma den Plate, finishing before Follefariue and C oth of Gold; end was nt placed in the Metropoltan Handicap (Ost 71b). At WeUingt n he won the Maden Pi le, b/atihg Pungawe* rewere and Crcksure; but with 7st 6ll> up w.’S not p’aced in the J, C. Hand cap, in which Guy Fawkes (B<f) fan fir-t, Templeton (8 j t 121b) second. Tattler meets Komi in the Cup on 17lb be-t-r terms, Guy Fawkes 19 b. Templeton 71b, a d as he has all the three-year-olds he ha* met he must be too good a colt fo • the three top-weights of the hndcap to give so much away to. Still, at Chrstchnrch his stb.e companion Daniel O’Ronrke, with all his weight,' sterns the more fan ned of the two, though Tatt'er has been made a favorite in Dune lin. We shall know more about their r spec ive capabilities however wh» n they are down at the for bury. I’avler should repeat his victories over < loth of Gold and Pu gawerewere, as he gives them very little weight. Mr G. Goo in be'sb hj Right Bower, 6 yrs, br The Per, 7st 31b, '8 in igliteiioughforlast yeai’s second and a six-yeaf-o’d; but it, must he rememb red that thm Tempi eto i and Right Bow. r were the only two hois- s in the race at a'l tit. He afte warJa r,m second in three races at Token air -o, and won the Consolaiio i ; at the Dune :in May meeting was not plac d in the Birthday Handicap, but won the Consolation; and at Tua .eka in January, cairiyihg 8 t 4.b, was not | laced in a mde and a half race that Fenian took three minute? to a in. Bight Bower was certainly not i hen in an*, thing like condition, and he is no doubt susceptibiemf improvement; but he won’t g • anything like so near whining the Dunedin Cup this ye>r as he did last.", Mr H. Bed wood’s b c ,C cksure, 3 yrs, by Towton Certarnty, 7st 2lb, has gone lame, and was scratched by Mr H. Prince, his present owner, oh Monday list. 1 Mr T: ShandVch c f l6th of Gold, 3 yrs, by Ra vensworth—Sweetbr!ar, 7st, ran at Christchurch in November, and was not placed in the Maiden. Plate or Derby. In the former race Daniel O’ifourke, Fi-hhopk, Pung'ayverewere, and Tattler finished before him; and inthe latter Korari, Tattler, and Folltfadne. Phis .should make him appear perhaps the we st three-year-old in the race, but his partisans say he did not show his tiue form in the Spring, being dead amis-i. He tfeir i.as-ed into the hands ot-bob Ray, who took him to Oreymouth end ran him in the Trial Stak s, but the colt bolted off the course. A’ Hokitika Cloth of Gold ran second to his stable companion Ta im« r in the Goldfields Handicap, and won the La die c »urse Next we find him running in Mr P. Campbell’s name at Timam a fortnight ago. In the South Canterbury Handicap he ran iccond to his stable companion Tommy Do Id, and repeated the performance next day in the Timam Cup. Those briiind him weie The Chief, Elfin King, and Mignonette. Although eye - wimes es say Cloth of Gold could have won both races easily if Mr Campbell had uot declared to win with the burd.e-racrr, still the performances are not high class enough to wairant the idea that he will run very well up in the Dunedin Cup. We shall know more about him when he is at work" nei e. He is now owned by Mr Studholme. of Can i;. rbury. ’ Mr W. Waiters’s br c Izuak Walton, 3yrs, by Dainty Ariel—Fann/ Fish r, 7st, is almost certain not to accept, not having been entered fur any o’htr laces at the me tiug Mr H. Utdwovd’a br f Amohia, 3yrs, by Towton-Anticipation, fist Trib, is the dark horse of the great stable. She has never y.t performed in public, but is highly spoken of, and if i. be true that she can runaway from Korari at even wemhts the Cup is at her m-r y. Howe /er, it is useless payi- g any atten ion to mme rumor, as any unperformed horse belonging to Mr Redwo d is always made out to be a flyer.
Mr F W. Delaroain’s Lr f .Pungawerewere, 3vrs, by Golden Grape—Atalanta, 6st lOib, is a fine looking filly, of whom g.eat thi- gs were ex- ected at Christchurch in the Spring, she having been well tried with Templeto;... Even money was laid cn her for the Derby, but she got no nea-er than third to Daniel O’Rourke a;.d Fishho k, beat ng, however’, (.'loth of Go’;d and Tattler; in the»Jhristchurch Pf»te, carrying fiat Bib, she was comphtely outpace.!, Kora i (7st 9 b). Fishhook (6st 131b), aud Daniel O’Rourke 1 (Sot 21b), running fin-t, second, and third; she was also distanced by
Castilian and Sonnambula in the Oonso’ation. ; A.t \\ ellington she ran second to Tattler for the Ala.den P ate; in the Derby tan third to Kora i a d Daniel O’ ■ ourlce, Fi.-hhook finish ing behind her th s time ; but in t e C nsVati nt i-hhook gav her 21b.s and beat her as he liked. At Timaru last month she won the Maid-n Ma e and the Tradesmen’s H ndicap in third-r Ue compny. The only one of her. oppon-nts in the Cup that Pungawerewei e has • eally beaten is Clotu of Gold, and the colt was then ou ; . of all form, so that Ido not fr a moment >ouk to her for the winner, although she is in nearly the best of the thiee-ye a-olds. ihe distance again is too long fur thi-fiTy, a m le-a d a-lialf being quit; enough for 1 her at a , p Of Mr Del m tin’s th ee entries I think he will pin his faith to T mplet n, if he gets over his lameness
, W. Dclamaih’s b f Follefarine, 3 yr,s. by Gold n Grape— Bi ll eof the Die, 6-t 81b, is another apparent non acceptor, she not hav ng arrived with Air Dearnam s horses, t*he ran third to Kori'i and Tattler for the Christchurch Maiden Plat’‘, but has done nothing of ndesnce.
, Shmd's hr o The 'Chi >f, 3 yrft, by Tow-ton-Queen of the South, fist 7 b is one of-ihe *9" °f youngsters t' at Webb was training for Cbristchmch Spring Meeting, and all of w “ich broke down o • went amiss. He ran last at Timaru, in the S uK Canterbury HandiConsolation froai Elfin King and Mignonette. .1 cannot look upon The Chief as a likely Cuu horse. ■
Mr Shand’s ch c Blair Athol, 3 yrs, by Raven-worth -AIo S i ose, fist 71b, is anot’ er that was all to pieces at Christchurch. He was there purchased by Mr rf. : Goodman, and he stripped twice at our November m eting. He is a fine,--strappi. g colt, but a strained sinew has a ways interfered with, his preparation, and la t week he was thrown oiit of training f..r the Cup. MrT. Keenan’s ch g Gamecock, aged, fist file, is we 1 known from his doin/s up-c umry and from the good race he ran for the D. J. Handicap last year with fist, 101b up, running third to Templet n (Bst 131b) and King Philip (/at 41b). and beating Rig t Bower (Bst lib), Tra’tor (Bst 81b), and He cules (7st 21b). Hewul m the Oup this ye ir be 71b and 14'b better oif as rig .rds Templeton and King Philip, and if any outsider wins it, t think it will be tins same Gamecock, for he may be relied upon to make the pace very hot right through. He is a staunch old hj .rse, and has shown that be is m good le'.tle this se ison by winning races at Cromwell easily with 9st 31b and.Dst 6lb on his back.
MrT. Thomson’s ch g Merry Monarch, 5 JTB, ost olp, won the Kakauui Ha’idicap, nnd waa s cpnd to Deception in the Publican? Handicap n December; but the next week t.ouid only get third to Cceleno and Exi'e in the Palmerston Handicap, and secon I to Blue Peter for rile Consolation. X don’t expect to see him in the ( up rat e after the first m le or so. Mr Swanks ch gSr Wiliam, 5 yrs, 6at olb, also ran at Kakanui and Pa merst n, winn‘ttg the Consolation at the former place and the Shag Valley Cup at the latter. . He is another hor.-e that is not near quality enough for the company to be met with in our Cup. Mr H. Drive 'a ch m Seauutrends, 5 yi-a, by To u Kmw—Gallwpadp, 6st, was entered in Mr O. Moore a name. She is tolerably well bred, but ia au uat.i d mire in public, so nothing is kn /Wo of her capabilities. These dark ones mi st be se.<n at work during the next two or thn e weeks. :
Mr T. ch hj Nabouchlish, 5 yrs, by Scud—hyaagt line, fiat, comes of a running family, but is also not a pub.ic performer, lie been doing a lot of work for two or three has moot 's back, and appeared to be a perfect g.utt on 'or it; but last week fever stacked !is feet and he was put out of tr ming. Ibe ieve he has recovered to a cer ain extent, and hj s party hope to get him fit. by the da/. Meantime he ;s one of the doubtful .starters. Mr D. Cocmn’s ch m Seabird, 4 yrs, by Sto.mb rd—Virginia, sst 12 b, has been backed steadily at a log price bn account of her fine bree rug, bat sin is qu te new to th* turf, and must be seen t i shape before having an opmionpassed on her. Mr T. Keenan’s ch c Freestone. 3 yrs, by Mign few limes up country this season without much result, and it appears that he is not going to start for the Cup. : Mr D. C.irsan’s ch f by Ftormbird—Merrimac, 3 yrs, sst 7b, his t ever faced a starter, so Imust wait hj r arrival before making any further mention of her. In coaclu-im, I mav f-ay that on p-.p-r I see nothing to beat King Philip and R.»ry O’More, unkss the a&x'lc Atnohia be tbe fly-r she is represented or Korari be so far superior to all other horsei of the year as to be abl ito = arry 111b ab-ve weight for-age to victory in a long P 0 ®- Gamecock I f incy ner ; , and then Fislih°ok. Tat. ter, and Tempi, ton (if fit), "i he 'next fortmgh, s work w.ll, however, in aU like! ho d th ow an entirely new bght on the aspect of matters, and I shall report regularly the doings at the Jb orbury.
