The amount of revenue received at the Customhouse on goods cleared for consumption this day was L 1,741 15s 7d. Gold, L1416s 6d, The report of the Standard Insurance Company, which is to be laid before the annual meeting of shareholders on the 6th prox., has been circulated, and wo make the following extracts from it:— “ The balance-sheet for the half-year ending December 31 last shows a balance of L 20,465 12s 9d to the credit of profit and loss account. Alter providing for all outstanding claims, and re-insurances of current risks for unexpired time, there will remain a net available balance of L8,036—a result which the directors consider very satisfactory, especially so when the unprecedented losses on first-class ships during the past season are taken into consideration. The business of the Company is steadily on the increase, and great care is taken to guard against the acceptance of bad or doubtful risks. It will he necessary for the well-being of the Company to inerease the capital, and the directors recommend that a dividend at the rate of ten per cent, on the original capital for the post year be declared and carried to credit of capital account. This will absorb L 2.500 of the available balance, leaving L5,53l for future operations. They regret not being in a position to recommend the distribution of a dividend.”
